What is the origin of Canada Day?

Canada Day originated from the creation of the British North America Act on July 1, 1867. The legislation was passed by the British Parliament and established Canada as a new domestically self-governing federation with New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec as provinces. On June 20, 1868, Governor-General Lord Monck signed a proclamation requesting Canadians to celebrate July 1st of each year as the country’s independence. By 1879, a federal law officially established July 1 as a “statutory holiday”, a day to mark the country’s anniversary of Confederation. Interestingly, this holiday was referred to as “Dominion Day” before it was finally declared and called“Canada Day” on October 27, 1982.

When is Canada Day celebrated?

Canada Day is a national holiday to mark the nation’s independence that began from the enactment of the 1867 Constitution Act on July 1, 1867. This year’s Canada Day will be celebrated on Friday, July 1, 2024. It’s the 155th time that our country celebrates this holiday to mark our nationhood. As such, government establishments, grocery stores, retail shops, and many private businesses will be closed. Therefore, Canadians are advised to order from available discount sales from shops offering promotions before the holiday starts.
