Canada’s Labour Day can be traced to the 1872 printers’ strike organized by workers who demanded a nine-hour-per-day workload reduction in Toronto. Much like modern-day unionism in workplaces, the employees who engineered the Nine Hour Movement against their bossy employers had a crucial demand - to reduce weekly work time and buy time for their personal life. One victimized company in the limelight of the agitation, The Globe, owned by George Brown, didn’t take the strike lightly. On 15 April 1872, more than 2000 workers marched through the streets of Toronto, joined by more than 8000 sympathetic Canadians. Despite several imprisonments and legal actions against the striking workers, John A. Macdonald saved the day and spearheaded the Trade Unions Act granting Canadian workers their demands and even more protection for their future trade unionism.
