Co-Op in Canada is a series of 160 independent co-operative associations around the country, which provide a range of products and services, including food, fuel, agriculture, and home or building solutions. Co-op differs from other businesses because they are owned by their members and are located right in the community. Co-Op has over 1.9 million members across 600 communities in Canada.
The idea of a co-op pre-exists the current organized Co-Op in canada. Co-ops started in the early 1900s between communities who wanted to support each other. The oldest association within Co-Op today started back in 1909, but the Co-Op brand of products were developed in the 1940s. The recognizable red logo started in 1957, with the most recent iteration in 1974.
The four branches of Co-Op - food, home, fuel, and agriculture - each have their own websites with different offerings. There are general Co-Op promotions, which include contests such as "Win your deck or fence" or Co-Op BBQ giveaway contests. Co-Op members have a wide variety of benefits and perks available to them.
Co-Op keeps members up to date through regular communications for members. There is also an active facebook group for people to stay up pto date. Currently, Co-Op is recognizing May as Fairtrade month, celebrating and promoting Fairtrade goods and products and the communities they are made in.
Because Co-Op is owned by their members, they are highly involved in the community. They have a Community Spaces Funding program, where community groups can apply for grants for local community projects. They also directly partner with farmers to help divert food waste from the landfill.
