What is the origin of Father’s Day?

Based on ancient traditions, Father’s Day originated from pagan sun worship. Sun is seen as the father of the universe which shines forth to provide life, freshness and strength to the universe. The June solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father's Day so some people saw a link between the two. However, Sonora Dodd planned the first Father’s Day to honour father figures, inspired by Mother’s Day. By 19th June 1910, the first official Father’s Day was observed in Spokane, Washington USA. Today, it’s increasingly popular throughout North America, especially in Canada.

When is Father’s Day in Canada?

This year’s Father’s Day will be celebrated on June 19, 2022. An epic observance in Canada and people will travel down here for the holiday. It’s a Sunday which makes it more interesting as several businesses will be closed for Father’s Day.  Notably, many Canadians will observe Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June to show their appreciation for fathers and father figures. Father figures may include stepfathers, fathers-in-law, guardians, and family friends. How is Father’s Day celebrated?

In Canada, we celebrate Father’s Day by partaking in fun runs, meetings, soccer and other games, and exchanging gifts.
