Over 400 million people worldwide are living with diabetes, and that number is expected to climb to more than half a billion by 2040. Right here in Canada, nearly 12 million people are currently living with diabetes or prediabetes. These figures have spurred much research into a better understanding of the condition, development of medical innovations to help manage it, and ultimately to find a cure for diabetes. ~ insulin pill? Could an insulin pill be on the horizon? A team of researchers at the University of British Columbia are working to develop an oral insulin tablet to replace daily insulin injections. / Some previous attempts to develop an oral form of insulin failed, because most of the insulin would accumulate in the stomach. The new research, which to date has only been conducted on rats, gets past the problem of swallowed insulin by creating a tablet that dissolves when placed between the gum and cheek. This technique utilizes the buccal mucosa, a membrane found within the lining of the inner cheek and the back of the lips. This pill delivers all of the insulin to the liver without wasting it along the way.
