DIABLO IV BETA HAS ME EXCITED FOR JUNE BY PAUL HUNTER Blizzard’s recent Diablo IV Open Beta offered a tantalizing glimpse into the upcoming action RPG, and it has exceeded my expectations in virtually every way. I’m already impressed by its dark storytelling, seamless open world with gruesome and gritty visuals, satisfying combat that reaches new heights for the series, and strong live services foundation that’s already set to support this game for years to come. The first thing that stood out to me is that Blizzard has really upped its game when it comes to storytelling. Diablo IV’s opening cutscene showing the resurrection of Lilith, the Daughter of Hatred and Mother of Sanctuary, sent chills down my spine and has me more invested in the story than any previous Diablo game. The same can be said about the open-world design with five large zones that, in a series first, has no loading screens between areas and can be explored in any order you choose. Sanctuary has also never looked better with its deliciously macabre visuals that capture the tone of Lilith’s reign of hatred. Diablo IV also nails the action RPG gameplay formula, delivering the engaging sword and sorcery combat fans have come to expect of the series while doing several tweaks to make things more interesting. Instead of spamming button attacks like before, battles require more strategy and the utilization of a wider moveset—including dodge rolls—to conquer the many skeletons, evil spirits, and creepy insects that infest each dungeon. After plunking a couple dozen hours into the Open Beta, I’m convinced that this hellish action RPG is on track to deliver something truly special.
